Hair Care After a Hair Transplant

The first weeks after a hair transplant matter. This guide covers the general basics of gentle hair care during recovery. Always follow your surgeon's specific instructions first — they know your procedure.

When can I wash my hair?

Most clinics give you a first-wash schedule, often within the first few days. Follow it exactly. Early washes are usually done by gently pouring diluted shampoo over the scalp rather than rubbing.

What kind of shampoo should I use?

Many clinics recommend a mild, sulfate-free shampoo during recovery because harsh detergents can dry and irritate a healing scalp. Ask your surgeon which shampoo they prefer. Many hair restoration clinics give their patients Regenepure.

What should I avoid?

  • Scratching or picking at scabs in the grafted area
  • Direct sun on the scalp in the early weeks
  • Hot tubs, swimming and heavy sweating until your surgeon clears you
  • Restarting minoxidil or other topicals before your surgeon says it's time

Is shedding normal?

Many patients see transplanted hairs shed in the weeks after surgery. This is commonly expected, and new growth typically takes several months. Contact your clinic if you notice redness, swelling or pain that worsens.
